The Sunshine State

Even though Florida is best known for its beautiful beaches, there is much more to discover! We’ll show you the best sights and activities that you definitely shouldn’t miss!

GENERAL INFORMATION

Florida consists of a peninsula and the adjacent mainland and is bordered by Alabama and Georgia, to the west by the Gulf of Mexico and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean. As early as 10,000 years ago, Indian groups came to Florida from the north.

Around 1513 it was explored by Juan Ponce de León, and in 1565 the Spanish founded St. Augustine. After the French and Indian War, Florida became a British possession in 1763. After the American Revolution (1783), the area fell back under Spanish control, but was used by the British as a base of operations during the War of 1812. Andrew Jackson’s capture of Pensacola during the First Seminole War (see Seminole Wars) led to the cession of Florida to the United States in 1819. Florida became a state in 1845. It seceded from the Union in 1861 and was readmitted in 1868.

In the late 20th century, the state became one of the fastest growing states in the United States. About 75% of the country’s citrus fruits are grown here, and Florida is the second largest vegetable producer after California .

Tourism is a leading industry, with Disney World as a major attraction. The electronics industry is important, and the aerospace industry, led by the Kennedy Space Center (see Cape Canaveral), employs many thousands of people. The state and particularly the city of Miami, with its large Cuban population, plays an important economic role in the Caribbean region. One of the many recreational areas is Everglades National Park.

FLAG

Flag of Florida

At the center of the Florida flag is the state coat of arms on a white background, surrounded by a red St. Andrew’s cross, reminiscent of the time when Florida was still a Spanish colony.

The state emblem, adopted in 1868, depicts a Native American woman (a Seminole woman) scattering flowers, a sabal palmetto (the state tree species), a steam-powered ship, and rays of sunshine over a hill. The images symbolize Florida’s native culture, natural beauty, and history as a port state.

Around the seal you can read the state name ‘Florida’ and the state motto ‘In God We Trust’.Insider tips

NATURE
National parks in Florida

The most famous national park is the Everglades National Park. It is also one of the largest national parks in the United States. The park covers an area of around 1.5 million hectares, making it roughly the size of Luxembourg. Everglades is a special place because it is home to a large number of animals and plants that are found nowhere else in the world. Every year around 1 million people come to the park to admire its unique nature.

CITIES
Cities in Florida

The state is home to several large cities. Some are known for their hot temperatures, others for their many tourist attractions. Cities like Miami and Orlando attract millions of people from all over the world. But there is one city that offers both and more: Tampa is not only a popular vacation spot, but also the hometown of two of the best NFL teams. So if you like both sun and sport, then you should definitely visit Tampa. I would recommend booking a Greyhound bus to visit tourist attractions. It has luxury interior buses and comfortable seats.

PLACES WORTH SEEING
Between Disney World and space travel

Disney World or the Kennedy Space Center are places that many people have fond memories of. I also have fond memories of these places. Especially at Disney World.

At the Kennedy Space Center you can learn a lot about space travel and see the rockets that astronauts flew to the moon.
