Amazon was founded by Jeff Bezos from his garage in Bellevue, Washington, on July 5, 1994. In 1994 Jeff Bezos, a former Wall Street hedge fund executive, incorporated Amazon.com, choosing the name primarily because it began with the first letter of the alphabet and because of its association with the vast South American river. The Amazon.com business strategy was often met with skepticism. Financial journalists and analysts disparaged the company by referring to it as Amazon.bomb. Doubters claimed Amazon.com ultimately would lose in the marketplace to established bookselling chains, such as Borders and Barnes & Noble, once they had launched competing e-commerce sites. The lack of company profits until the final quarter of 2001 seemed to justify its critics.

However, Bezos dismissed naysayers as not understanding the massive growth potential of the Internet. He argued that to succeed as an online retailer, a company needed to “Get Big Fast,” a slogan he had printed on employee T-shirts. In fact, Amazon.com did grow fast, reaching 180,000 customer accounts by December 1996, after its first full year in operation, and less than a year later, in October 1997, it had 1,000,000 customer accounts. Its revenues jumped from $15.7 million in 1996 to $148 million in 1997, followed by $610 million in 1998. Amazon.com’s success propelled its founder to become Time magazine’s 1999 Person of the Year.

The company expanded rapidly in other areas. Its Associates program, where other Web sites could offer merchandise for sale and Amazon.com would fill the order and pay a commission, grew from one such site in 1996 to more than 350,000 by 1999. Following Bezos’s initial strategy, the company quickly began selling more than books. Music and video sales started in 1998. That same year it began international operations with the acquisition of online booksellers in the United Kingdom and Germany. By 1999 the company was also selling consumer electronics, video games, software, home-improvement items, toys and games, and much more.

To sustain that growth, Amazon.com needed more than private investors to underwrite the expansion. As a result, in May 1997, less than two years after opening its virtual doors to consumers and without ever having made a profit, Amazon.com became a public company, raising $54 million on the NASDAQ market. In addition to the cash, the company was able to use its high-flying stock to fund its aggressive growth and acquisition strategy.

Beyond retailing

As noted above, Bezos claimed that Amazon.com was not a retailer but a technology company. To underscore the point, in 2002 the company launched Amazon Web Services (AWS), which initially offered data on Internet traffic patterns, Web site popularity, and other statistics for developers and marketers. In 2006 the company expanded its AWS portfolio with its Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), which rents out computer processing power in small or large increments. That same year, the Simple Storage Service (S3), which rents data storage over the Internet, became available.

S3 and EC2 quickly succeeded and helped popularize the idea that companies and individuals do not need to own computing resources; they can rent them as needed over the Internet, or “in the cloud.” For example, in 2007, soon after launch, the S3 service contained more than 10 billion objects, or files; five years later, it held more than 905 billion. AWS is even used by Amazon.com’s rivals, such as Netflix, which uses both S3 and EC2 for its competing video streaming service.

COVID-19

At the end of March 2020, some workers of the Staten Island warehouse staged a walkout in protest of the poor health situation at their workplace amidst the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. One of the organizers, Chris Smalls, was first put on quarantine without anyone else being quarantined, and soon afterwards fired from the company.

The pandemic caused a surge in online shopping and resulted in shortages of household staples both online and some brick-and-mortar stores. Acquisition of MGM

After months of speculation due to MGM’s poor financial performance from the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on the movie industry, Amazon entered negotiations to acquire MGM at an estimated $9 billion on May 17, 2021. The companies agreed to the merger deal on May 26, 2021 for a total value of $8.45 billion, subject to regulatory approval. The deal would allow Amazon to add the MGM library to the Amazon Prime Video catalog, with the studio continuing to operate as a label under the new parent company. These plans are expected to not impact the future of the James Bond franchise and its creative team. Two town halls further detailing MGM’s future post-merger took place on March 18, 2022, which included one for MGM employees and one for Amazon Studios/Prime Video employees.Both revealed the new interim reporting structure as part of Amazon’s “phased integration plan,” which would involve De Luca, Mark Burnett (Chairman of MGM Worldwide Television) and COO Chris Brearton reporting to Hopkins on behalf of the studio.^[65] On April 27, 2022, it was announced that De Luca and Abdy would leave the studio.

Les gants se révèlent chaque hiver un accessoire de mode indispensable. Pour cette saison, la tendance est très largement au rétro. Bien que le chaud et le froid puissent être des bienfaits pour la santé, il convient de rester prudent, notamment en été lorsque la température extérieure monte parfois vertigineusement. Car dans ces circonstances, la température du corps monte elle aussi. Or, notre cerveau (comme la majorité de nos organes) ne supportent pas les hausses de température. Afin d’éviter tout danger de surchauffe, notre organisme a la faculté de transpirer pour se protéger. Le mécanisme de transpiration permet d’évacuer la chaleur du corps et de réguler sa température, mais cela implique de fortes consommations d’eau qu’il est nécessaire de compenser massivement pour éviter la déshydratation.

1. Multipliez les douches et les baignades

Un des remèdes les plus efficaces contre la chaleur est la traditionnelle douche, idéalement froide, et relativement courte (quelques minutes sous le jet d’eau suffisent amplement). Même s’il n’est que temporaire, l’effet rafraîchissant est indéniable. Mais songez à notre planète en ne multipliant pas trop exagérément le nombre de douches. Si vous le pouvez, n’hésitez pas à faire un saut dans la piscine (méfiez vous tout de même des risques d’hydrocution en mouillant la tête et les bras préalablement) ou à profiter des joies de la baignade lorsque la température de la mer ou de l’océan est idéale. Avantage : vous combinez ainsi le sport et la fraîcheur.

2. Buvez fréquemment de l’eau à température ambiante

Il est recommande de consommer d’un litre et demi à deux litres de boisson par jour, quelque soit la saison. Sauf que la transpiration est plus importante lorsqu’il fait chaud : il est donc nécessaire de compenser les pertes en buvant nécessairement plus en été qu’en hiver. Bien que nous ayons souvent le réflexe de boire de l’eau fraîche lorsqu’on a chaud, il est préférable de boire des boissons à température ambiante afin d’éviter que l’organisme ait à réchauffer les liquides trop froids que nous ingérons. Il est donc préférable de boire tiède afin de contrer la transpiration. Évitez le café et le thé en trop grande quantité, car ils sont diurétiques : ils favorisent l’élimination de l’eau. L’alcool est également à proscrire puisqu’il déshydrate. La meilleure solution reste donc la bouteille d’eau, à portée de main, chez vous comme en déplacement.

3. Essayez d’anticiper sur la sensation de soif

Il ne faut pas attendre d’avoir soif pour boire, car la sensation intervient lorsqu’on est déjà déshydraté. N’attendez donc pas et buvez régulièrement de l’eau : ce n’est d’ailleurs pas tant la quantité que la fréquence qui compte. Afin que l’organisme ne manque jamais d’eau, organisez des “rituels” d’hydratation, en adoptant par exemple le rythme d’un verre d’eau toutes les deux heures, et ce, que vous ayez soif ou non. Ces habitudes permettent de limiter les risques de déshydratation. Ainsi, vous prendrez l’habitude de boire plus souvent et dans de plus grandes quantités. De plus, ces réflexes devraient sensibiliser les plus jeunes et les plus âgés à la nécessité de boire toute la journée durant.

4. Mangez mais évitez le sel et les aliments diurétiques

Il y a bien sûr la traditionnelle glace, idéalement en sorbet, particulièrement riche en eau. Mais attention de bien varier vos repas car la glace a pour inconvénient majeur d’inciter l’organisme à produire de la chaleur. Pour un repas riche en eau, privilégiez les fruits et les légumes : les soupes froides du type gaspacho sont particulièrement appréciées en été. Cependant, certains aliments (ananas, concombre, figue, melon, pêche, oignon, navet, poireau etc…) sont diurétiques et donc à consommer en quantité raisonnable lorsque l’objectif est de s’hydrater efficacement. Veillez enfin à éviter les aliments trop salés (charcuterie, poisson fumé, gâteaux apéritifs, fruits secs) : bien qu’ils favorisent la sensation de soif, le sel retient l’eau ce qui nuit à l’hydratation de l’organisme.

5. Utilisez un brumisateur

N’hésitez pas à opter pour un brumisateur de poche : en vous aspergeant le visage et les membres de cette légère brise toujours très rafraîchissante, vous diminuerez rapidement la température du corps. En cas d’exposition longue au soleil, la crème solaire est indispensable. Vous pouvez également recouvrir vos épaules d’une serviette humide ou mouiller vos cheveux. Et asseyez vous à proximité des fontaines publiques qui jouent le rôle de brumisateur géant au cœur de l’été ! Mais attention : bien que cela soit rafraîchissant, ce n’est pas pour autant hydratant : pensez donc à boire de l’eau. Enfin, le brumisateur n’aime pas la chaleur : prévoyez donc une glacière, car il aura tendance à se réchauffer, notamment dans la voiture où il peut régner une température dépassant parfois les 50°C !

Comment sont mesurées les températures en météorologie ?

La température et les précipitations sont les deux paramètres atmosphériques les plus fréquemment mesurés. Or, si les principes physiques mis en œuvre sont simples, il convient d’admettre que des erreurs de mesure importante peuvent exister. Comme on pourrait s’en douter, les météorologistes ne se contentent pas de relever la température d’un thermomètre posé sur le rebord d’une fenêtre. En effet, des mesures prises sans précaution donneraient automatiquement des résultats fortement influencés par l’environnement de l’outil de mesure.

La température est une mesure influencée par de nombreux facteurs

Le degré de chaleur diffère forcément de la température que l’on ressent car cette dernière est fonction de l’humidité ambiante, du vent ou même encore du rayonnement solaire, apte à provoquer de très fortes hausses de température. Placer le thermomètre à l’ombre ne résout pas le problème puisque l’outil tend à s’échauffer encore de quelques degrés du fait de la réflexion des rayons sur l’environnement (terrasse, fenêtres, toiture etc…). De plus, si l’appareil était mouillé, l’évaporation d’eau entraînerait un certain refroidissement. Ces conditions, en partie aléatoires, empêcheraient à coup sûr de comparer entre eux les différents relevés de températures.

Des conditions de mesure sous abri standardisées

Aussi, afin de mesurer la température dans des conditions absolument standards, et de pouvoir en déduire des cartes d’isothermes (lignes d’égale température), il est indispensable que le thermomètre soit toujours dans le même environnement. C’est pourquoi l’appareil est placé dans un abri météorologique, le plus neutre possible, donc peint en blanc et dans lequel il est justement protégé des intempéries (neige, grêle, pluie, rosée) comme du rayonnement solaire et infrarouge. Pour éviter tout biais, la base de l’abri est installé sur un sol naturel à végétation basse (idéalement un gazon) et le capteur de température est placé à environ 1,50 mètre du sol. Les météorologistes disposent ainsi de la température minimale (relevée à 18h), maximale (relevée à 6h) et moyenne enregistrée au cours des dernières 24 heures.

Une mesure en réalité facilement perfectible

Si les capteurs de température présentent une fiabilité très satisfaisante, en revanche l’incertitude de la mesure de la température de l’air persiste essentiellement en raison de la difficulté de disposer d’un abri et d’un emplacement parfaitement neutre. Tous les corps émettent un rayonnement infrarouge d’intensité variable expliquant le refroidissement nocturne important du sol et des objets. L’abri doit donc être capable de protéger le capteur de tels déséquilibres. Mais la contrepartie est que ces abris météorologiques sont peu ajourés et ont tendance à réduire la ventilation de manière trop drastique. C’est pourquoi les meilleurs abris s’accompagnent désormais d’une ventilation naturelle.

Et comment faire en l’absence d’abri ?

Si vous ne disposez pas d’un d’abri, il est conseillé de suspendre le thermomètre à l’ombre, c’est à dire du côté nord de la maison (afin de s’affranchir des effets du rayonnement solaire direct), à distance des murs et à l’abri des précipitations. Un sol bétonné, qui aurait emmagasiné de la chaleur toute la journée, est bien entendu proscrit. Ne perdez pas de vue que la lecture du thermomètre doit se faire l’œil bien en face du liquide pour éviter tout risque d’erreur de parallaxe. Et bien sûr, afin de pouvoir comparer les mesures entre elles, prenez soin de toujours réaliser les relevés aux mêmes heures et sur le même instrument.
